BOXING : Norris a Big Favorite in Defense Against Waters

Share

Terry Norris, continuing his quest for a showdown with Julio Cesar Chavez, fights tonight at the San Diego Sports Arena in the main event of a card starting at 4 p.m..

The card also includes Maurice Blocker, Hector Camacho and Lupe Aquino. Significantly, none of those fighters is fighting any of the others, resulting in slow ticket sales for the Don King production, which includes more than 80 scheduled rounds of boxing.

Norris (34-3 with 20 knockouts) will oppose Australian Troy Waters for the World Boxing Council super-welterweight title. This will be the first of four Norris fights to be promoted by King this year as he attempts to increase demand for a Norris-Chavez bout.

It would take a major upset for Waters (20-2, 14 knockouts) to stop Norris, who has won 13 in a row since losing to Julian Jackson in 1989. Most of Waters’ fights have been in Australia against little-known opponents.

Another title bout will feature Blocker against Puerto Rican Felix Trinidad for the International Boxing Federation welterweight championship. Blocker (35-3, 19 knockouts) unsuccessfully challenged Norris in Mexico City in February.

Trinidad, 20, has a 19-0 professional record and 16 knockouts. However, like Waters, he has done most of his fighting in his home country.

Camacho and Aquino are making comebacks, Camacho (42-2, 19 KOs) against Tom Alexander (17-4, seven KOs) and Aquino (41-5-2, three KOs) against Eric Valdez (17-1-1, eight KOs).

Norris’ brother, Orlin, the North American Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion, was dropped from the card Friday after he failed to reach agreement with King.
