Alex Cole and pitcher Willie Blair each drove in a career-high four runs, and the Colorado Rockies set a team record for runs in a game as they routed the San Diego Padres, 17-3, at Denver on Saturday night.

The Rockies scored eight times in the third inning, capped by Charlie Hayes’ three-run homer, to eclipse their previous best inning of six runs.

Hayes’ 422-foot homer was his 11th of the season and his third in as many games. The inning also included Blair’s first major league run batted in on a suicide squeeze with the bases loaded. Blair (3-4), who gave up nine hits over eight innings, also helped his cause with a three-run double in the seventh.

Padre starter Kerry Taylor (0-5) left after the squeeze play, and Eric Young and Cole greeted reliever Mark Ettles with back-to-back two-run singles for a 12-1 lead.

Andres Galarraga, the major league’s leading hitter, went three for five, including a run-scoring single in the seventh, to increase his average to .434.

The Rockies scored four runs against Taylor in the second inning, highlighted by consecutive run-scoring singles by Cole, Dante Bichette and Galarraga.

San Francisco 10, Houston 3--Matt Williams homered and drove in six runs and John Burkett became the National League’s first 10-game winner as the Giants beat the Astros at Houston.

Burkett (10-2) gave up seven hits, struck out two and didn’t walk a batter in seven innings to win his sixth consecutive decision.

Williams hit a three-run homer, his 21st of the season, against Greg Swindell (5-7) in the first. He also hit a two-run, bases-loaded double in the Giants’ six-run ninth, giving him 63 runs batted in for the year.

Pittsburgh 8, New York 3--Jay Bell’s bases-loaded triple completed a five-run Pittsburgh fourth inning in which only two balls left the infield at Pittsburgh, helping the Pirates to run the Mets’ losing streak to five games.

Blas Minor pitched five scoreless relief innings as the Pirates won their third in a row in the four-game series after losing 10 of their previous 12.

Met starter Frank Tanana (4-6) took a 3-1 lead into the fourth after rookie Tim Bogar’s two-run double, but left eight batters later despite giving up only one solidly hit ball.

Singles by Jeff King, Lloyd McClendon and Don Slaught loaded the bases--only McClendon’s left the infield--and rookie Ben Shelton walked to force in a run. Rookie William Pennyfeather’s groundout tied the score.

Lonnie Smith walked to load the bases again before Bell tripled into the right-center field gap to score all three runners.

Atlanta 4, Montreal 3--Ron Gant led off the eighth inning with his 16th home run, lifting the Braves over the Expos at Montreal.

Philadelphia 5, Florida 2--Lenny Dykstra had three hits, including a home run, to lead the Phillies past the Marlins at Philadelphia.

Dykstra is 48 for 141 (.340) in his last 35 games, and has increased his average from .227 to .286. He also scored twice and leads the National League with 61 runs.

Terry Mulholland (9-5) gave up two runs and eight hits in five innings for the victory. Jose DeLeon, Larry Andersen and Mitch Williams relieved, with Williams gaining his 20th save.

St. Louis 6, Chicago 4--Geronimo Pena hit a home run and two doubles at Chicago, leading the Cardinals over the Cubs.
