AMERICAN LEGION ROUNDUP : Woodland Hills West Prevails, 15-14

John Novak had five hits and three runs batted in to lead Woodland Hills West to a 15-14 victory over Verdugo Hills in an interdivision District 20 American Legion baseball game Saturday at El Camino Real High.

Verdugo Hills (5-1) had leads of 6-0 in the second inning and 10-4 in the fifth, but Woodland Hills West (4-1) rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and six in the seventh.

After falling behind, 15-10, Verdugo Hills rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth. Verdugo Hills had runners at first and second with two out, when Randy Wolf, the City Section 4-A Division player of the year, came in and ended the game with a strikeout.

West’s Mike Glendenning had three hits and four runs batted in, and Verdugo Hills catcher David Fielder had four hits and drove in four.

In other District 20 games:

West Hills 11, North Hollywood 10--Jason McLean slugged two home runs, including a solo shot with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, for an interdivision victory at Chaminade. McLean had four RBIs.

Casey Cote added two hits for West Hills (2-3) and Joel Orme (1-1) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out three. J.C. Cabrera had two hits for North Hollywood.

Quartz Hill 17, Lancaster North 16--Jeff Bowne doubled home Darryl Hussman with the tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Hussman scored the game-winner on Jimmy Cannon’s single to left field in a Northern Division game at Quartz Hill.

Bowne and Sean Potter each had three hits, three RBIs and two runs for Quartz Hill (5-2-1). Brandon Parks had four hits and two runs for Lancaster North (1-5).

Las Virgenes 16, Van Nuys South 6--Jason Warren had four hits and three RBIs, and Kevin Sass added three hits and three RBIs for Las Virgenes in an interdivision game at Calabasas.

Sun Valley 11, Palmdale West 7--Paco Hernandez had two hits and four runs, and Jerry Delgado added two hits and three RBIs for Sun Valley (4-4) in an interdivision game at Poly.

Granada Hills West 12, Van Nuys South 1--Phil Cohen hit a three-run home run and Dave Cippola was three for three with four RBIs, leading Granada Hills West (4-1) to an interdivision victory at Granada Hills.

Valley North 16, Sepulveda 7--Rick Staves pitched a complete game despite giving up 15 hits, striking out 15 for Valley North in an interdivision game at Chatsworth.

DISTRICT 16

Westlake-Royal 8, Ventura 5--Todd Singleton (2-0) allowed four hits and one earned run in eight innings, striking out eight, to lead Westlake-Royal at Ventura. Gene Strojek and Joe Mellinger each had two hits, and Scott Morris added a double and three RBIs for Westlake-Royal (4-1 in district play).

Newbury Oaks 9, Oak Park 8--Jim Stueve walked, was sacrificed to second by Ryan Glass and scored on a single by Jason Lightfoot in the bottom of the ninth to propel Newbury Oaks.

Glass had three hits for Newbury Oaks (4-3).
