CALABASAS : Street Widening Set to Ease Congestion

Share

In an effort to ease dangerous, congested traffic near Calabasas High School, road crews will widen a stretch of Old Topanga Canyon Road north of Mulholland Highway next month.

“When you get to the peak traffic hours in the morning and the afternoon, it gets very bottleneck and very unsafe, especially when the kids start trying to go fast,” said City Engineer Dale Lipp. “The widening will provide for better through traffic.”

The City Council last week approved the contract for the project, which will cost about $200,000 in fees collected several years ago from a nearby developer.

Work on the 300-foot stretch about 350 feet north of Mulholland is expected to begin in mid-July and continue for about a month. Some or all lanes of Old Topanga Canyon may be shut down at times during the construction, Lipp said.

Although widening the street all the way south to Mulholland might unclog traffic even more, funds are not available for a larger-scale project, Lipp said.
