Recreation Centers to Feed Poor Children

Share

The Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department will offer 8,500 lunches a day to children from low-income families this summer.

The program, funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides lunch to children 19 and younger who get free meals at school during the academic year. The lunches, including a sandwich, fruit, fruit juice and milk, will be served for two hours starting about noon at 96 recreation centers in Los Angeles, from July 7 to Aug. 27.

“It’s not any great, gourmet food, but it’s nourishment,” said Recreation and Parks Department spokesman Al Goldfarb. “Maybe it will help somebody get through the day.”
