And then there were two.

Five players with South Bay ties were in the men’s and women’s singles draws at Wimbledon, but three were first-round losers in the tournament, which began Monday.

Pete Sampras, a former Palos Verdes High standout who is the top-seeded player in the men’s draw, reached the third round with two victories. Lindsay Davenport, a 17-year-old former Chadwick High student, advanced with a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 victory on Tuesday over Veronika Martinek of Germany. It was Davenport’s first match in the main draw after playing in the junior division last year.

Davenport, 28th on the Virginia Slims rankings, will play 27th-ranked Barbara Rittner of Germany in a second-round match today. Rittner defeated former USC player Linda Harvey-Wild, 6-0, 6-3, in a first-round match.

Tarango won the 1986 Southern Section singles title as a student at Mira Costa.
