3 Area Players Named to Softball Team

Three South Bay softball players have been named to the Southern Section Division III second team by a coaches’ panel.

Selected were freshman pitcher Kerry Martin of Redondo High, junior pitcher Jennifer Ramos of West Torrance and sophomore utility player Jenni Purchase of Bishop Montgomery.

Martin, the Ocean League player of the year, had a 16-3 record and 0.25 earned-run average in leading Redondo to the league title. Ramos, the Pioneer League player of the year, was 16-8 with an 0.50 ERA for league runner-up West. Purchase, an All-Mission League first-team selection, helped Bishop Montgomery finish second in league play and beat West, 3-1, in the first round of the playoffs.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills golf team will benefit from a football clinic today through Sunday in the school’s humanities and fine arts building.

The 18-hour clinic, which will emphasize fundamental drills and techniques for coaches, starts at 7:30 a.m. today and 6:45 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and will be broadcast live via satellite from Dallas by the All Sports Satellite Network.

Among the instructors will be coaches Jimmy Johnson of the Dallas Cowboys, Gene Stallings of the University of Alabama and Eddie Robinson of Grambling.

Dominguez Hills golf Coach John Johnson said it may be the first clinic broadcast via satellite.

“It’s a unique concept, that’s for sure,” Johnson said. “This is a onetime event to be able to get these people on one field at the same time and hold a clinic like this.”

The cost is $40 for the three-day clinic or $20 for one day.

All ages are eligible to compete in the Kaiser Hospital Harbor Area Run for Youth on Sunday morning at the Holiday Inn, 19800 S. Vermont Ave., in Torrance.

A 5-K event begins at 8, a 10-K starts at 8:30 and a mile family fun run-walk is scheduled to start at 9:30.

The cost is $18 for the 5-K and 10-K and $10 for the mile fun run.

Registration is from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday or at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at the Holiday Inn.

The Hawthorne National Pony-Colt Baseball Program will play host to three district tournaments starting today in Hawthorne.

The first will be an invitational tournament for 13-year-olds through Wednesday at Dana Junior High. The tournament will include teams from the South Bay and Westside.

Teams from the South Bay will also compete in a District 1 and 2 Pony all-star tournament for youths 13 and 14 from July 11 to 16 at Dana Junior High and a District 1 and 2 Colt all-star tournament for youths 15 and 16 from July 5 to 11 at Hawthorne High.

The tournaments are the first step toward the 1993 Pony and Colt World Series in Lafayette, Ind., in August.

The 1993 Palos Verdes sports camps for youths 5 to 10 will be Monday through Aug. 19 in Rancho Palos Verdes.

There will be four-day basketball camps with sessions starting Monday and July 26 at Ladera Linda Community Center; four-day soccer camps starting July 5, 12 and 19 at Fred Hesse Park, and four-day T-ball and baseball camps starting Aug. 2 and 16 at Fred Hesse Park.

Youths 8 to 16 are eligible to participate in the Dominguez Hills baseball camp that will have four sessions in July.

Sessions will start July 5, 12, 19 and 26.

The cost is $85, including a T-shirt, awards and door prizes.

Instructors include Toro Coach George Wing and pitching coach John Verhoeven, a former major leaguer with the Angels and Minnesota Twins.

Loyola Marymount will play host to a basketball camp for youths 8 to 16 starting Sunday in Westchester.

The first session is Sunday through Thursday and the second session is Aug. 1-5.

The cost is $225 for the day camp or $350 for the overnight camp. The camps are run by Lion Coach John Olive. One of the scheduled speakers will be Nevada Las Vegas Coach Rollie Massimino.
