Strawberry Is Fined for Late Arrival

Injured outfielder Darryl Strawberry was fined a day’s pay for arriving late for Thursday’s game against the Houston Astros at Dodger Stadium.

Strawberry, who will make $3.5 million this season, stands to lose $19,230.76.

Strawberry is on the disabled list for the second time this season with a bad back but is expected to complete his training regimen before each game.

Vice President Fred Claire said that Strawberry arrived during the middle of Thursday’s game. Claire, visibly upset, said Strawberry had phoned the club shortly before he arrived.

Claire said Strawberry would be suspended if he was late again.

“He gave me a reason (for being late), but I won’t go into that because it wasn’t good enough for me,” Claire said.

Claire told Strawberry of the fine after Thursday’s game, then Strawberry left and could not be reached for comment.

“All the other players were here on time,” Claire said. “We have 25 guys in uniform, busting their butts. This is a case of a player reporting to a game after it started and I’m not going to tolerate that.”
