BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Now He Won’t Even Talk a Good Game

Darryl Strawberry made it to Friday’s game on time but would not comment in detail about the fine he received Thursday for arriving in the middle of an afternoon game against the Houston Astros.

“I ain’t talking to the press no more, all year, I’m finished,” Strawberry said.

Pressed later, Strawberry, who insisted he not be quoted, explained that he showed up late for Thursday’s game because of frustration related to the back injury that has put him on the disabled list for the second time this season.

Strawberry said he does not want to come the stadium if he cannot play and would prefer to do his rehabilitation elsewhere.

Strawberry also said he doubted he would return to the lineup this season.

He will not accompany the team on any more trips, but he will be required to attend all home games.

Fred Claire, the team’s vice president, said he does not anticipate any more problems with Strawberry.

“It’s frustrating for him,” Claire said. “He always wants to play at a high level. It’s not easy. I understand that it is not easy.”

Claire, usually unflappable, was irritated Thursday as he explained why he was docking Strawberry one day’s pay, $19,230.76.

Claire had cooled considerably Friday.

The Dodger executive, who likes to run to relieve the tension of his job, ran six miles after his ordeal with Strawberry.

“I felt better,” Claire said.

Third baseman Tim Wallach is still day to day because of a pinched nerve in his left shoulder.

Wallach removed himself in the fifth inning of Thursday’s game after aggravating the injury as he tried to snare Andujar Cedeno’s single to left.

“It felt like someone stabbed me in the shoulder every time I moved,” Wallach said Friday.
