DENVER — Sammy Sosa went six for six to tie a club record, and he established a Chicago record with nine consecutive hits over two games as the Cubs defeated the Colorado Rockies, 11-8, Friday night.
Sosa, one hit shy of the National League record for consecutive hits, also had three stolen bases and two runs batted in.
The last Cub to have six hits in a nine-inning game was William McCormick on June 29, 1897. Jose Cardenal had six hits in a 14-inning game on May 2, 1976.
The Cubs, who won their fourth in a row, blew a 5-0 lead but reclaimed the lead on Sosa’s runs-scoring single in the sixth inning.
Steve Buechele and Steve Lake also had two runs batted in for the Cubs, who had a season-high 21 hits. Jose Bautista (3-2) was the winner and Randy Myers got the last three outs for his 25th save.
Colorado’s Andres Galarraga went two for five with two RBI doubles to keep his average at .403.
