THOUSAND OAKS : Road Closed to Remove Explosive

Share

The Ventura County bomb squad removed an explosive device from under a bridge leading to Westlake Island in Thousand Oaks Sunday morning, authorities said.

East county sheriff’s detectives closed La Venta Road leading to the island and removed the grenade-type device after a Westlake Island resident spotted it from his boat on Westlake Lake at about 10 a.m.

The device, designed to cause a loud explosion and bright flash, might have been stowed for Fourth of July festivities later in the day, authorities said. It was not powerful enough to have damaged the bridge but could have harmed boaters, authorities said.
