America West to Cut Fares: The airline has kicked off what could become a new air fare war, just as the other carriers dropped similar discount campaigns. America West said it will offer savings of up to 30% below its regular fares, starting July 7 for travel completed before Oct. 1. Tickets must be purchased by July 28. The surprise announcement came as major carriers in competing markets ended cheap fares first offered June 19, covering travel through Sept. 30. The offer was first extended from June 30 to July 2, then to July 6. There was no immediate comment from America West competitors on whether they would match the new program. The new America West offer requires a Saturday night stay, with the lowest off-peak fares covering travel on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Slightly higher peak fares are available.
