TENNIS ROUNDUP : Top-Seeded Bruguera Sweeps Past Karbacher

Top-seeded Sergi Bruguera of Spain defeated Germany’s Bernd Karbacher, 6-4, 6-0, Tuesday in the first round of the Swiss Open at Gstaad.

Bruguera, the world’s fifth-ranked player, is playing in his first tournament since beating Jim Courier in the French Open final.

Second-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria overcame a shaky start against Argentina’s Martin Stringari and advanced to the second round, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 and Marc Rosset, seeded seventh, beat Argentina’s Gabriel Markus, 6-1, 6-2.

Spain’s Marcos Arelio Gorriz upset third-seeded Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, in the rain-interrupted first round of the Swedish Open at Bastad. Svensson then announced he would not play for Sweden’s Davis Cup team in its quarterfinal match because he wasn’t feeling well enough.

Fifth-seeded Magnus Bergstrom of Sweden beat Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Magnus Larsson, in an all-Swedish encounter, beat Anders Jarryd, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

Second-seeded Brenda Schultz of the Netherlands defeated Elena Savoldi of Italy, 6-4, 6-0, in the first round of the Torneo International at Palermo, Italy.

Bryan Shelton, the two-time defending champion, was unable to handle the serve of Japan’s Shuzo Matsuoka and lost, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), in the first round of the $175,000 Hall of Fame Championships at Newport, R.I.
