Ex-Dodger Marshall Will Assist at Glendale

Mike Marshall, an outfielder with the Dodgers from 1981 to 1989, will be an assistant baseball coach at Glendale College next season.

Marshall, who played for the New York Mets in 1990 and the Boston Red Sox in 1991, will join the Vaquero coaching staff at the start of the fall semester Aug. 24.

“We’re very excited to have him on the staff,” Glendale Coach Steve Coots said in a release. “We know he’ll be a great benefit to our program. Everyone’s excited.”

Marshall lives in La Canada.

Golf

South African Nick Price, the hottest player on the PGA Tour, will team with Greg Norman of Australia in the Shark Shootout Nov. 16-21 at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

Tom Kite and Davis Love III will defend their title in the $1,000,000 event, which benefits a host of children’s charities.

With a victory last week at the Western Open, Price became the first player on the PGA Tour to record consecutive years over $1 million in winnings.

Price and Norman finished first and second at the Western Open, marking Price’s second victory in as many weeks. Price and Norman are ranked first and third on the season winnings list.

In all, 20 players will participate in the event. The gallery will be limited to 5,000 spectators. Information: 800-924-8983.

Darren Angel of Northridge fired a four-under 68 Thursday in the final round of the Las Vegas Founders’ Legacy junior golf tournament at Legacy Golf Club in Las Vegas, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Angel, a junior at Granada Hills High, finished three shots behind Ted Haley of Rye, N.Y., who shot a final-round 71 and finished at 209.

Art Weiner of Taft High shot 75 in the final round and tied for 22nd at 225. Scott Golditch of Taft and Scott Heyn of Alemany finished in a four-way tie for 30th at 229.

Elise Kimm of North Hollywood, who graduated from Grant this year, shot 72 and finished two strokes back in a four-way tie for second at 223 in the girls’ competition.

Allison Wilson, a junior at Grant, shot 75 and also finished at 223.

Softball

Former area softball players Priscilla Rouse, Karen Walker and Shelia Cornell will be among 17 players representing the United States in an eight-country International Softball Federation tournament July 17-25 in Haarlem, Holland.

Rouse is a 1987 graduate of Cal State Northridge and the Matadors’ former center fielder. Walker graduated from El Camino Real High in 1985 then played shortstop for UCLA from 1986 to 1989. Cornell, a 1980 graduate of Taft High, played infield at UCLA from 1981-84.

The team, chosen by members of last year’s U.S. national team, also will include former UCLA pitchers Lisa Fernandez and Debbie Doom.

Players are chosen from amateur teams from across the nation, according to Shirley Topley, former softball coach at Cal Poly Pomona and assistant coach of the U.S. team. Ralph Raymond, coach of a women’s amateur team in Connecticut, will serve as head coach.

Cycling

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys, a member of the Miller Lite Cycling Team, recorded top-five finishes in a pair of events last weekend in Ottawa, Ill.

Rogers, a former Olympian, placed fourth on Saturday and fifth on Sunday in the Starved Rock Classic. Teammate John Wordin of West Hills placed 19th on Saturday.

Basketball

The Chatsworth High boys basketball team captured the championship of the Palm Springs Invitational on Sunday. Trenell Floyd, who scored 17 points to lead the Chancellors to a 46-29 win over Riverside Banning in the championship game, was selected the tournament’s most valuable player.

Paul Radenberg, who coached last season at Crespi, has been named coach at Garces High in Bakersfield.

Swimming

Four Ventura College swimmers were named National Community College All-Americans this week.

Damon Nygren’s 1:58.21 time in the 200 butterfly was 10th-best nationally. Carl Warren’s 59.85 time in the 100-yard breaststroke was 13th. Nygren and Warren teamed with Ian McFarlane and Mike Pharaon in the 400 medley relay to achieve the 13th-best mark (3:40.91).

Miscellany

Cal Lutheran has announced several coaching changes for the 1993-94 school year.

Kecia Davis, the women’s basketball coach for the previous two seasons, will be the head softball coach and athletic trainer, replacing Teri Rupe and Rod Poindexter.

Cheryl Aschenbach, the Regals’ starting catcher the past four years, will be an assistant under Davis.

Tim La Kose, junior varsity basketball coach at Royal High last season, will replace Davis as the coach of the women’s team.

Steve Hawkins, an assistant for the women’s track and field team in 1992, will replace Matt Griffin as men’s cross-country coach.

Men’s tennis Coach Herb Rapp will be replaced by Mike Gennette.
