A 23-year-old Santa Ana man dressed in women’s clothing was shot to death Saturday morning by a man after a fight near the intersection of Bishop and Maple streets, police said.

The victim, Daniel A. Castro, was walking with a male friend on the 400 block of East Bishop Street when they were confronted by a group of males standing in the front yard of a home, said Lt. Earl Porter.

After hostile words were exchanged, the victim and his friend continued walking west along Bishop Street, Porter said.

One of the men who had confronted Castro followed him to the 600 block of South Maple Street, near the intersection, where words were again exchanged and the man struck Castro, Porter said.

When the victim pushed the man back, the assailant pulled out a small-caliber handgun and shot Castro once, killing him, Porter said.

Castro’s companion was not injured.

The suspect in the shooting walked away, entered a waiting car and fled, Porter said.

“The shooting was unprovoked,” Porter said. “The shooting was not gang-related.”
