The Washington Bullets signed their top draft choice, Calbert Cheaney of Indiana, to a six-year contract. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Richard Esquinas, who claimed he won $1.25 million from Michael Jordan playing golf, and his lawyer met with an NBA consultant as the league began an investigation into the links between its players and gambling.

Esquinas and Bob Costello met with Frederick Lacey, a former federal judge and U.S. attorney.

Richie Adubato and Ron Rothstein have been hired to be Mike Fratello’s assistant coaches with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Debbie Graham will replace injured doubles partner Pam Shriver on the United States’ Federation Cup team.

The International Olympic Committee confirmed that Sydney has a superior bid to host the Summer Games in 2000. The decision will be made by a secret IOC ballot in Monte Carlo on Sept. 23. The other contenders are Beijing; Berlin; Brasilia, Brazil; Istanbul, Turkey; and Manchester, England.
