Venice : Library Construction
Construction begins next month on the replacement for a Venice library that no longer meets earthquake standards.
The new Venice-Abbot Kinney Memorial branch--to be built in the median on Venice Boulevard at Ocean Avenue--will be twice the size of the 63-year-old branch on California Avenue. Work on the 10,500-square-foot facility begins Aug. 2 and will take 14 to 18 months, according to Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, whose district includes Venice.
The one-story library will have room for 45,000 books, separate reading rooms for children and adults, a multipurpose room, exhibition space and a kitchen. The site will include a parking lot.
The cost of construction is estimated at $2.8 million, two-thirds of which will be paid from federal grants. The rest comes from a libraries bond issue approved by city voters in 1989.
The California Avenue branch will stay open until the new building is completed.
