Gerald Goldberg; Political Activist, Journalist
Gerald (Jerry) Goldberg, 66, political and civil rights activist and founder of Pacific West News Service. A Los Angeles native, Goldberg served with the Army in the Philippines during World War II and later attended Los Angeles City College. He was a longtime staff member of the Los Angeles Congress of Racial Equality. Active on the county and state Democratic central committees, he handled several political campaigns and worked as a spokesman for state Sen. David A. Roberti and former state Sen. Paul Carpenter. As a journalist, Goldberg founded the Pacific West News Service and was editor of the Los Angeles Free Press, the Orange City News and the Sacramento-based Capital News Service. He had worked for several smaller newspapers, including the defunct Hollywood Citizen News, and served as president of the Los Angeles Newspaper Guild. On July 5 of a heart attack while driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
