IRVINE : Special Election for Council Seat Slated

Share

The City Council this week officially scheduled an election for Nov. 2 to fill a vacant council seat.

The council also allocated the money to pay for the election.

Tuesday’s move came less than a week after the county registrar of voters certified the signatures of 4,551 people who sought a special election for the post. Under city rules, 4,339 signatures--or 7% of registered voters--are needed to force an election.

The election will cost about $60,000, said City Clerk Judy Vonada.

Candidates have until 5 p.m. Aug. 6 to file applications with the city. To run for office, a candidate must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and an Irvine resident, Vonada said.

It will cost candidates about $700 to have their statements printed in voter information pamphlets. Under federal rules, all candidate statements in Orange County must be printed in English, Vietnamese and Spanish.

Whoever wins the election will serve the year remaining on the term of William A. (Art) Bloomer, who resigned from the council July 1 to accept a job in northern Virginia.
