All-Star Game Is Last Hurrah for Seniors

Several recent graduates from area high schools are expected to play in the 17th annual Chris Mims-Los Angeles Prep Senior Bowl all-star football game at 7:30 tonight at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

The South-West team, coached by Glenn Bell and his staff from Kilpatrick High in Malibu, includes five players from Westchester High and two each from Inglewood and St. Bernard.

Westchester will be represented by wide receiver-defensive back Richard Bowden, running back Oliver Baines, wide receiver Phillip Jones, center-linebacker Brian Collins and defensive lineman Tyrone Carter. They’ll be joined on the squad by tight end-defensive end Sherman Jackson and wide receiver Brandon Crockett of Inglewood, and offensive lineman Steve Buether and tight end Chris Bowman of St. Bernard.

The event is named after Mims, a San Diego Charger defensive end and former standout at Southwest College, who made a $50,000 donation to the game last year.

Nancy Fortner, the women’s volleyball coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills, was recently named an All-American in the masters division of the United States Volleyball Assn.

Fortner’s 40-and-over club placed second out of 10 teams at the 64th U.S. Open Championships in Memphis, Tenn. Fortner, 50, a former Olympian, is a hitter on the L.A.-based Mavericks.

The Westchester Babe Ruth League’s 13-year-old all-star team won the state championships on July 23.

Westchester went 4-0 in the double-elimination tournament and Justin Child and Kristofer Zacuto were named tournament co-most valuable players. The team will represent Southern California in the regional playoffs next week in Elko, Nev.

Harbor College women’s basketball Coach Louie Nelson has received unwritten commitments from three All-City Section players for the 1993-94 season.

Lameshia Pittman and Latrece Polk of Banning High and Shonte Tippie of Jefferson will play for the Seahawks next season.

Pittman, a 5-foot-10 forward, was the Pacific League most valuable player last season. She averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists a game. Polk, a 5-4 All-Pacific League point guard, averaged 12 points, seven assists and three steals. Tippie, a 5-7 guard, averaged 28 points and 15 rebounds.

A softball clinic for girls ages 9 and up will be conducted at the Wilmington Athletic Complex on Aug. 7-8.

The two-day instruction will cover pitching, hitting, fielding, catching and baserunning. Instructors will include former and current collegiate softball players. The athletic complex is at 1700 Figueroa St. in Wilmington. The fee is $50.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills athletic department will sponsor a series of youth sports camps at various South Bay and Long Beach locations beginning Monday. The camps include instruction in soccer, girls’ volleyball, girls’ basketball and softball.

Dominguez Hills will play host to three days of co-ed and men’s seven-a-side soccer tournaments in August to help support its men’s and women’s soccer programs.

The field will be about half the size of a regulation soccer field, there is no offsides and teams may substitute on the fly. The men’s open tournament is scheduled for Aug. 8 and the co-ed event is Aug. 9.

The City of Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring a basketball camp for girls between the ages of 11 and 16.

The camp--limited to the first 40 girls--starts Aug. 16 and ends Sept. 3. The camp runs from 3 to 7 p.m. daily. Participants will receive a T-shirt, notebook, player profile card and a certificate of participation. Cost is $35.

The Inglewood recreation department will sponsor the second annual City of Champions karate tournament on Aug. 8 at Roger’s Park Recreation Center. The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation is conducting junior tennis leagues at various South Bay locations through Aug. 14.

The annual program, for youths from ages 8 to 17, is designed to provide youngsters in underprivileged areas an opportunity to play tennis. Each participant will receive 18 hours of instruction, a T-shirt, a certificate of participation and a one-year membership to the United States Tennis Assn., which also includes a subscription to Tennis Magazine.

Registration fee is $10, however, no child is turned away because of inability to pay. Tennis rackets are also provided when needed. Some of the South Bay locations include Victoria Park in Carson, Centinela Park in Inglewood and Peck Park in San Pedro.
