ORANGE : Energy Efficiency Pays Off for College

Chapman University’s new campus center is reaping praise--and money--for its energy efficiency.

Southern California Edison has issued the university a $50,000 rebate because Chapman’s new Argyros Forum building is “an exemplary model of energy efficiency.”

SCE, through its Design for Excellence Program, had worked with Chapman officials in planning the building, which opened last fall. The $14-million campus center is the second Chapman building in two years to qualify for an Edison rebate.

“The design and completion of this beautiful facility represented a team effort,” wrote Edison official Gary Sutliff in a letter to the university that accompanied the $50,000 check.

Sutliff said the Argyros Forum was built with “just about every option available for energy efficiency,” and he praised the university for its “environmental concern.”

University officials said the 95,700-square-foot building saves the campus money and helps the environment.

“It means a lower operating cost for the life of the building, and using less energy means creating less pollutants,” said John Ferris, Chapman’s assistant director of facilities management.
