Wright Pushes Plan for Waste Authority
State Sen. Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley) plans to hold a meeting of the County Waste Commission today to rally support for a bill that would create a countywide waste authority.
In the past two weeks, Wright has visited the city councils in Ventura, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Moorpark and Santa Paula to push the proposal.
If approved, the authority would merge some of the responsibilities of the Ventura Regional Sanitation District and the Waste Commission, which includes representatives from each of the county’s 10 cities.
Under stipulations outlined in the bill, at least seven of the cities would have to agree to join the authority for it to be created.
The bill is scheduled to be considered by the State Assembly Natural Resources Committee on Aug. 16.
Oxnard, Simi Valley and Moorpark have voiced concerns about belonging to a countywide authority, saying they may lose control over their trash.
But Wright’s aide John Theiss said changes have been made in the bill that satisfy Moorpark and Simi Valley, leaving only Oxnard in opposition to the authority.
Wright plans to address the Oxnard City Council next week, Theiss said.
