The two players brought in to spice up the Rams’ running game will get a chance to do just that in the team’s exhibition opener against the Cardinals at Phoenix Saturday night.

First-round draft choice Jerome Bettis and third-round selection Russell White will play in the backfield together against the Cardinals. They will enter the game in the second quarter, Coach Chuck Knox said.

“We want them to get enough work and want each of them to get a chance to carry the football,” Knox said Thursday. “We have programmed that accordingly.”

Defensive end Bill Hawkins (knee) and defensive tackle Mike Piel (shoulder) are still recuperating from off-season operations.

Knox said he will use his starters for at least one quarter Saturday. T.J. Rubley, battling Mike Pagel for the No. 2 quarterback job, will be the second quarterback used, replacing starter Jim Everett in the second quarter. Knox said Pagel will play in the fourth quarter.
