LOCAL NOTES : Kiraly, Steffes Win Again

Karch Kiraly of San Clemente and Kent Steffes of Pacific Palisades teamed to win the $100,000 Miller Lite Open at Grand Haven, Mich.

Kiraly and Steffes beat Eduardo Anjinho and Jose Loiola, both of Brazil, 15-11, for the title. The winning team split $20,000.

It was the sixth consecutive tournament and 10th in the last 11 that Kiraly and Steffes have won.

They’re the top-ranked team on the AVP tour entering the $150,000 Miller Lite Open, which starts Friday at north side of the Seal Beach Pier.

Woody Bowersock of Leisure World set a pair of age-group world swimming records and Rita Simonton of Huntington Beach set one world record and a national one Sunday at the Southern Pacific Masters’ Assn. Longcourse meters championships held at Margurite Recreation Center in Mission Viejo.

Bowersock, 80, set world marks in the 50 freestyle (33.88 seconds) and the 100 free (1:22.50).

Simonton, 75, set a world record in the 200 free (3:39) and a national mark in the 100 free (1:40.07).
