A Sunny Hills High School graduate has received a $20,000 scholarship from Southern California Edison.

Yvonne Mary Wei, who graduated from high school this summer, plans to attend Harvard University in the fall to study economics. She would like to eventually teach at the college level, she said.

Wei and three other Southland high school seniors were selected from 900 applicants.

The scholarship award was based on academic performance, leadership and extracurricular activities, according to Millie Paul, a spokeswoman for Southern California Edison.

“She is an exceptionally good student,” said Barbara Kilponen, president of the Fullerton Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees.

Southern California Edison gave $340,000 in scholarships this year, according to Paul.

“By supporting these young people, we are investing in the future,” said Tani Welsh, a Southern California Edison manager who helped select Wei for the scholarship.
