BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : OWNERS’ MEETINGS : No Smiles, No Talk on Day 1
On the first day of meetings in Kohler, Wis., aimed at bringing about a historic change in the way teams do business, large-market clubs caucused among themselves, as did teams from smaller markets.
The large-market teams have the power to block proposed increases in revenue-sharing among the clubs, because 21 votes are needed to adopt any change. The chief proponents of change, executive council chairman Bud Selig and management labor negotiator Richard Ravitch, were not smiling after they met with the large-market caucus for about 30 minutes.
The Angels and Dodgers were in the large-market caucus.
No substantive public comments were made by owners, and none were expected until late today at the earliest.
