No one will be more in need...
No one will be more in need of a lift this weekend than competitors in the Summer Soaring Festival, a competition for handlers of radio-controlled gliders.
The event, to be held Saturday and Sunday on the Cal State Dominguez Hills campus in Carson, is expected to attract 70 gliders with wingspans ranging from six to 12 feet. Gliders will be catapulted into the air, and their handlers will guide them from the ground.
Winners will be those who keep their gliders aloft for three to seven minutes and guide them to a designated landing spot. “The object is to soar like an eagle,” said event organizer Ed Kennedy of Rancho Palos Verdes. “If you don’t find lift, you’re down in two minutes.”
The competition is free for spectators. But the Soaring Union of Los Angeles, the club presenting the event, is charging competitors a $30 entry fee to raise money for math, science and technology scholarships at Cal State Dominguez.
Kennedy said club members have been flying their gliders on the Cal State campus for years. “We thought it was about time we gave something back,” he said.
