It’s a Day of Firsts for Angels, 14-2

Greg Myers drove in a career-high four runs and rookie Phil Leftwich earned his first major league victory, leading the Angels over the Seattle Mariners, 14-2, Sunday.

It was the most runs ever scored by the Angels against the Mariners and also was their widest margin of victory in history against Seattle.

Leftwich (1-3), a 23-year-old right-hander making his fourth start for the Angels, was backed by a season-high 22-hit attack that included seven doubles and only the Angels’ fourth home run in August.

Leftwich, who was called up from triple-A Vancouver July 28 after the Angels released Scott Sanderson, pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out three.

Seattle’s Tim Leary (8-5) lasted only 1 2-3 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits and a walk.

The Mariners ruined Leftwich’s shutout bid with seventh-inning home runs by Greg Litton and Edgar Martinez.

Rookie Eduardo Perez, who hit the homer, and Chad Curtis each had three RBIs for the Angels, who broke a three-game losing streak. Seattle had a three-game winning string broken.

Myers, Perez, Torey Lovullo, Gary DiSarcina and Luis Polonia each had three hits for the Angels.

The Angels made it 7-0 with a six-run second. Polonia doubled in the first run, Curtis drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, Myers had a two-run single and Perez hit a two-run homer, his third of the season.

The Angels stretched their lead to 11-0 with three runs in the fifth as Curtis doubled in two runs and Myers had an RBI single.
