OXNARD/VENTURA : Meeting Slated for Freeway Widening
The California Department of Transportation and the cities of Ventura and Oxnard will host the first public meeting Aug. 26 on a multimillion-dollar project to widen the Ventura Freeway at the Santa Clara River over-crossing.
The project, which is expected to cost more than $44 million, will not begin until after July, 1995, because state funding will not be available until then, said Rick Raives, Ventura city engineer.
Caltrans will pay for half of the project, and Oxnard and Ventura will each pay 25%, he said.
Currently there are six lanes on the Santa Clara River bridge, and officials want to widen the freeway to eight or 10 lanes.
“There’s certainly a bottleneck there,” Raives said.
The project will also redo ramps at Oxnard Boulevard and Johnson Drive, he said.
The meeting “is an opportunity for people to comment on the project,” Raives said. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oxnard Hilton at 600 E. Esplanade Drive.
