SEAL BEACH : City Pier Will Be Closed for Repairs
City officials hope to have more than $210,000 worth of repairs to Seal Beach Pier completed by mid-October, about a year after the landmark was damaged by both a fire and earthquakes.
The city is accepting bids for the project and should select a contractor by September, City Manager Jerry L. Bankston said.
A 1992 fire damaged a lifeguard station and portions of the pier.
The contractor will replace burned planks and repair the lifeguard station.
Some support pilings that were cracked by the Landers and Big Bear earthquakes in July, 1992, will also be replaced.
Bankston said construction will close the pier for seven to 10 days.
A related project is set to begin early next year when workers repair the concrete groin that runs beneath the pier.
The groin reduces erosion by allowing sand to build up along the beach.
Workers will resurface portions of the groin that have been chipped away, and they might also repair steel supports.
The estimated cost of the project is $250,000.
If the repairs are not made, Bankston said, the groin might eventually have to be replaced.
