Ground spraying of the pesticide malathion will begin near a Rosemead intersection today after 19 Mediterranean fruit flies were discovered in the area, state agriculture officials said.

Workers equipped with backpack sprayers will spray malathion on trees and shrubs around the intersection of Graves Avenue and San Gabriel Boulevard.

Residents were notified Tuesday of the spraying, said Larry Hawkins, spokesman for the Medfly Project, a state Department of Food and Agriculture program. He said there are no plans for aerial spraying of the pesticide.
