BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Red Sox Trade for Deer to Boost Hopes
The Boston Red Sox, struggling to stay in the American League East race, acquired slugger Rob Deer from the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named.
Deer, who batted .217 in 90 games for Detroit this season, has 219 homers in a major league career that has included stints in San Francisco and Milwaukee.

New York Met pitcher Bret Saberhagen, is on the disabled list because of torn knee cartilage, was injured in a boating accident off the coast of Long Island. According to a team spokesman, Saberhagen sprained his right ankle and suffered a cut on his right shin, requiring stitches.
