THOUSAND OAKS : Pit Bull Quarantined Following Attack

A pit bull that attacked a Thousand Oaks woman and one of three dogs she was walking remained under quarantine at the Los Angeles County Animal Care Center in Agoura on Wednesday, officials said.

The 26-year-old victim, who was not identified by police, suffered bite or claw wounds to her foot after she tried to keep the pit bull from attacking her dog during the Tuesday night incident, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department deputies said. The victim’s dog received bite wounds to its back and neck, police said.

The pit bull had broken loose from its chains attached to a camper near Conejo School Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard, police said. The pit bull’s owner, Anne Cunningham of Simi Valley, was at work at a nearby restaurant, police said.

Cunningham, 43, had a second dog chained to the camper while she was at work, but only one broke free, police said. Cunningham was arrested on an unrelated traffic warrant, police said.

The pit bull will be observed for five days to see if it is sick, said a spokeswoman at the animal shelter, where the city of Thousand Oaks contracts for animal control service.

Dogs attacking dogs is not uncommon, said the spokeswoman, who did not want to be identified. The pit bull probably will be released to its owner if it is found to be healthy, she said.
