OUTLOOK

Athletics is turning a corner at Verdugo Hills and the Dons’ impending football season looks promising. For many years considered the doormat of the Northern Conference, the Dons made the playoffs in four sports in 1992-93. The softball team won the school’s first City title in June and a winning fever seems to be catching. The Dons, who were vastly improved last season despite their record, have endured an extensive weight-training program in the offseason and have new physiques to prove it. “Now when they turn sideways, they’re not counted absent,” Johnson quipped. “We actually have pecs and biceps on these football players now.” Look for Verdugo Hills to challenge Eagle Rock for the league title.
