MacKinen to Resign From Airport Post

Marshall A. MacKinen, Ventura County’s administrator of airports, has announced plans to resign at year’s end, saying he wants to direct a high-volume commercial airport.

MacKinen was named to the $56,000-a-year position in February, 1991, after working as an administrator at airports in Lewiston, Me., San Jose and New Orleans. His most visible role in Ventura was overseeing discussions with officials of Point Mugu Naval Air Station over the possible conversion of that facility to civilian use.

“He was a very enthusiastic guy and enthusiastic about the commercial possibilities at Point Mugu,” said Frank Schillo, a Thousand Oaks councilman who heads the county Transportation Commission.

In a letter sent Wednesday to Richard Wittenberg, the county’s chief administrative officer, MacKinen said he plans to again work at a busy commercial airport such as the one in New Orleans.

“The longer I stay in general aviation and non-hub environments, the harder it will be to market myself in the commercial avenue,” he said.

On Thursday, Wittenberg confirmed receiving the resignation. Attempts to reach MacKinen on Thursday were unsuccessful.
