IRVINE : Car Crash Kills Man; Passenger Survives
A man was killed Monday night after he was partially thrown from his car which then rolled over him on a San Diego Freeway on-ramp, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
David Burke, 43, of Mission Viejo was driving north on the Jamboree Boulevard on-ramp at 8 p.m. when “the car left the roadway for an unknown reason,” CHP spokesman Mike Lundquist said. “There were no skid marks. The car just went over the embankment and overturned.” Burke’s speed is not known, Lundquist said.
Burke died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. His passenger, 38-year-old Cheryl Wilband of Mission Viejo, was wearing a seat belt and was able to climb out of the overturned vehicle with only minor injuries.
Lundquist said both the driver and passenger had been drinking, but it is not yet known if the driver was drunk.
Lundquist said the accident illustrates the importance of wearing seat belts, which is now required by law.
“The person who died was not wearing a seat belt and the person who was, survived,” Lundquist said. “Seat belts save lives.”
