GOING FOR ZERO: Police agencies are taking the sexual harassment issue seriously. At least they’re sending some of their officers to a two-day seminar on the subject in Huntington Beach next week. Lt. Vic Thies of the Irvine Police Department, which was a target of such accusations earlier this year, says the goal is “a zero-tolerance policy. No toleration of off-color jokes or sexual harassment.” . . . Good reason for the seminar, he says: “Obviously what was in place in the past was not working.”

GOOD LUCK: Rosalind Chao, who has a lead role in “The Joy Luck Club,” which premiered this week, was discovered at age 7 at her parents’ restaurant. An agent saw her at Chao’s, still in business across from Disneyland, and talked her parents into letting her do commercials. “My parents were not wild about it; they wanted school to be a primary focus,” says Chao, who’s been a TV and movie actress since. . . . Orange County, she says, is much more integrated than when she was growing up here: “I really had felt like we were definitely a minority then.”

HOT OFF THE GRILL: Rancho Santiago College announced this week that its foundation will co-sponsor a business executives’ round-table Sept. 28 where fast-food magnate Carl N. Karcher will “share his secrets for success in today’s business environment.” . . . You wonder if Karcher chose the topic himself. Karcher is embroiled in battle with his own board of directors over the direction of his company and his personal attorney has advised him to consider bankruptcy.
