Fillmore’s superintendent of schools has announced plans to break a four-year contract and leave the district at the end of the school year.

After 30 years as a teacher and administrator in the California public school system, David S. Haney, 50, said he plans to retire from public education and take a job at Point Loma College in Pasadena.

Haney, who has served as Fillmore superintendent since the 1991-92 school year, said he decided to leave so he could be closer to his wife, who works in Rialto.

Haney said the main task he would like to finish before leaving the district is completion of a new middle school.

In his new capacity at Point Loma, he will serve as director of graduate studies.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for me,” Haney said. “It allows me to be close to my family and get into a new career.”

The school district has not begun searching for a replacement, said Robert Kernen, assistant superintendent of business and personnel.
