BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Hershiser Says Hand Feels OK

Pitcher Orel Hershiser, who was struck on the back of his right hand by two line drives Thursday and forced out of the game after 2 1/3 innings, said he felt no discomfort while throwing at home Friday and so decided not to bother undergoing X-rays.

The two drives struck about an inch apart, one near his pinky and the other toward the middle of his hand. The first one, hit by Orestes Destrade, was “a glancing blow,” Hershiser said, while the second, hit by Benito Santiago, was more damaging and left a bruise. His hand remained slightly swollen Friday, but Hershiser expects to make his next scheduled start.

“I played catch and it felt fine. I had no problem,” he said. “I had a ball at home and I threw the ball off the wall a bit and there was no pain.”

Trainer Charlie Strasser said Hershiser’s official status is day-to-day, “but it looks optimistic” that he won’t miss a start.

Tom Goodwin, whose two-out, 10th-inning single drove in the decisive run in the Dodgers’ 6-5 victory Thursday, joked that he would lecture Eric Karros for scoring standing up.

“I don’t know why he didn’t slide,” Goodwin said. “I’m going to have to talk to him about that.”

Goodwin, who on Friday got his first start of the season--he led off and played center field--also got in a dig at Karros’ lack of speed. With Karros at second, Goodwin said, “you’ve got to hit one out to win the game.”
