PREP FOOTBALL : FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
Whittier Christian 6, Los Angeles Salesian 6--An interception by Salesian’s Andrae Benavidez stopped a fourth-quarter drive to preserve the tie in the opener for both teams.
The Heralds’ defense held Salesian to 34 yards in the first half. But the offense couldn’t convert on scoring chances, turning the ball over on downs at the Mustangs’ six on the opening drive and missing three field-goal attempts.
The Mustangs’ touchdown came on a four-yard pass from Jeff Martinez to Sal Magana with 8:31 left in the third quarter.
The Heralds answered with a 12-play, 69-yard drive, capped by a five-yard run by Bobby Duran.
After a misplayed fake field goal by the Mustangs at the Herald six, Whittier Christian drove to the Salesian 39 before Benavidez’s interception.
Duran had 41 yards in 12 carries for Whittier Christian.
