Preview ’93 : A Few Fall Touch-Ups

The fall season not only heralds new series, but also returns old ones with a few changes to keep the veterans fresh and audiences tuned in. Here are the highlights of what’s new in established series and their return dates.

ABC

“Coach”: Christine (Shelley Fabares) becomes a morning talk-show host. Luther (Jerry Van Dyke) is offered another job. The series moves to Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday .

“Family Matters”: Mother Winslow (Rosetta LeNoire) marries the man of her dreams (Arnold Johnson). Urkel (Jaleel White) is pursued by a beautiful teen-ager (Michelle Thomas). Sept. 24.

“Full House”: Danny (Bob Saget) marries girlfriend Vicky (Gail Edwards). Tuesday.

“Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper”: Teacher Mark Cooper’s (Mark Curry) cousin (Saundra Quarterman) and her daughter (Raven-Symone of “The Cosby Show”) move into his house. At school, Cooper confronts a new principal (Nell Carter). Dawnn Lewis is no longer with the series. The show moves to Fridays at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 24.

“Roseanne”: Darlene (Sarah Gilbert) goes away to college. Dan (John Goodman) gets a city government job. Roseanne (Roseanne Arnold) yearns to have a baby. Tuesday .

CBS

“Bob”: The Bob Newhart sitcom goes through a major revamping. Newhart, Carlene Watkins and Cynthia Stevenson remain from last season. Jere Burns and Eric Allen Kramer join the series, which finds Bob returning to work at the greeting card company. Betty White appears in the recurring role of the wife of Bob’s old boss. Oct. 22

“Evening Shade”: Alexa Vega joins the cast as 3-year-old Emily. Sept. 20.

“Good Advice”: Teri Garr joins the cast as Shelley Long’s impulsive, ambitious sister. The sitcom moves to Fridays at 9 p.m. Oct. 22

‘In the Heat of the Night”: Carl Weathers (“Rocky”) joins the cast as Police Chief Hampton Forbes. Carroll O’Connor’s Bill Gillespie becomes the county sheriff. Former regular Howard Rollins is scheduled to guest star. The series moves to Thursdays at 8 p.m. Thursday.

“Love & War”: Annie Potts of “Designing Women” joins the cast as a worldly gourmet chef who signs on for kitchen duty at the Blue Shamrock. Susan Dey, who played owner and chef Wally Porter, has departed. Sept. 20.

“Murphy Brown”: Scott Bakula (“Quantum Leap”) joins the cast in the recurring role of a brash reporter. Sept. 20.

“Northern Exposure”: Joel (Rob Morrow) and Maggie’s (Janine Turner) relationship broadens. Grahame Greene returns for several episodes as the healer, Leonard. Sept. 20.

“Picket Fences”: Don Cheadle joins the cast as the new district attorney. Ray Walston, who played the recurring role of Judge Henry Bone, is now a regular. The series moves to Fridays at 10 p.m. Oct. 22.

Fox

“Beverly Hills, 90210”: The class has graduated from high school. Already premiered.

“In Living Color”: Jay Leggett, Anne-Marie Johnson (“In the Heat of the Night”), Carol Rosenthal, Marc Wilmore join the show. The series moves to Thursdays at 9 p.m. Thursday.

“Melrose Place”: Heather Locklear has been promoted to regular status as the Melrose gang’s landlord. Vanessa Williams has departed. Already premiered.

“Roc”: The sitcom is no longer broadcast live. Eleanor (Ella Joyce) will give birth. Alexis Fields joins the series as a preteen who comes to live with the family. The series moves to Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Already premiered.

NBC

“Blossom”: Blossom (Mayim Bialik) is now a high school junior. David Lasher, who played the recurring role of Blossom’s boyfriend, has become a regular. Melissa Manchester plays Blossom’s mom on a recurring basis. Sept. 24 .

“Empty Nest”: Marsha Warfield (“Night Court”) joins the sitcom as a doctor who runs an inner-city clinic. Sophia (Estelle Getty), late of “The Golden Girls,” moves into the Shady Pines retirement home. Carol (Dinah Manoff) becomes a single mother. Paul Provenza and Lisa Rieffel are gone. Sept. 25.

“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”: Daphne Maxwell Reid assumes the role of Aunt Vivian. Sept. 20.

“Getting By”: The Cindy Williams and Telma Hopkins sitcom moves from ABC to the Peacock Network. Sept. 21.

“I Witness Video”: John Forsythe is the new host. The reality-based series moves to Sundays at 7 p.m. Sunday.

“L.A. Law”: Susan Ruttan, Sheila Kelley and Lisa Zane have departed. Two cast members from ABC’s “Civil Wars”--Alan Rosenberg, as attorney Eli, and Debbi Mazur, as his secretary Denise--join the firm. A fundamentalist Christian attorney, played by Alexandra Powers, also signs on. Oct. 7.

“Law & Order”: S. Epatha Merkerson joins the cast as Lt. Anita Van Buren. Capt. Donald Cragen (Dann Florek) has accepted a promotion to police headquarters. District Attorney Claire Kincaid (Jill Hennessy) replaces Assistant D.A. Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks), who has left to join a Park Avenue law firm. Sept. 22 .

“Mad About You”: John Panknow, who guest-starred as wisecracking Cousin Ira, becomes a regular. Richard Kind has departed the show. The series moves to Thursdays at 8 p.m. Thursday.

“Nurses”: Loni Anderson joins the series as a fiercely ambitious hospital administrator. Stephanie Hodge and Markus Flanagan are no longer on. Sept. 25 .

“Sisters”: George Clooney will play Teddy’s (Sela Ward) new boyfriend. Sept. 25.

“Wings”: Farrah Forke, who plays helicopter pilot Alex Lambert, is now a regular. Thursday.
