Roger Smith and Mark Knowles were selected Tuesday to represent the Bahamas in singles play in its Davis Cup match against the United States this month.

The winner of the qualifying-round match, scheduled for Sept. 24-26 at Charlotte, N.C., will remain eligible for the 1994 Davis Cup title. The loser will be relegated to regional competition.

Sean Cartwright and John Farrington also were picked for the Bahamas team.

Smith is ranked 191st in the world in singles, with Knowles at No. 168. They led their nation to victories over Chile and Uruguay in Davis Cup play this year.
