SIMI VALLEY : Police to Seek Fund for Canine Program

Simi Valley police will ask the City Council Monday to set up an account so community groups and individuals can make donations to support the department’s canine program.

The 12-year-old canine program is credited with 38 arrests for last year, Police Chief Lindsey P. Miller said.

The department’s two police dogs and their handlers also helped with 168 other arrests and took part in more than 700 searches for suspects and narcotics.

Miller said police departments in Ventura, Oxnard and Santa Paula have accounts for canine programs and have used donations to buy police dogs.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department uses only donations to buy, train and maintain the animals in its four-dog program, Sheriff’s Cmdr. Joe Harwell said.

Simi Valley’s police dogs have been purchased through the city’s general fund and through assets seized in drug investigations.
