Calvin Williams of the Philadelphia Eagles is usually overshadowed by Fred Barnett, the team’s more heralded wide receiver.

But Sunday against the Washington Redskins, Williams was the star. He caught eight passes for 181 yards and scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner with four seconds left as the Eagles beat the Redskins, 34-31.

Williams’ final touchdown came on a 10-yard pass from Randall Cunningham that he caught just inside the back line of the end zone. The Eagles (3-0) drove 83 yards in 10 plays in less than two minutes.

“I just saw the two safeties, caught Randall’s eye and he picked me up,” Williams said. “We’ve been doing this for four years now and we’re really relaxed in this situation.”

Cunningham completed 25 of 39 passes for 360 yards and the three touchdowns to Williams.

Cary Conklin of the Redskins (1-2), who made his first NFL start in place of injured Mark Rypien, completed 17 of 36 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns.

“I thought we made enough plays to win,” Conklin said. “Obviously it didn’t work out. It kind of makes you sick.”

The Eagles trailed, 31-27, with 1:54 left when Cunningham started the winning drive with a 12-yard pass to Williams.

Trailing 21-10, the Eagles closed the gap in the third quarter when cornerback Eric Allen intercepted a pass by Conklin and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

But the Redskins, helped by a 42-yard pass interference call and a 20-yard pass from Conklin to Tim McGee, moved to the Philadelphia 22 before Chip Lohmiller kicked a 38-yard field goal 12 seconds into the final quarter.

Cunningham directed a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with his second touchdown pass to Williams, a nine-yarder with 8:23 left that tied the score, 24-24.

Only 22 seconds later, Reggie Brooks scored on an 85-yard run to give the Redskins the lead. Brooks gained 154 yards in 22 carries.

Cunningham, however, keyed another drive by connecting with Herschel Walker on a 55-yard pass play and scrambling for 14 yards. The drive stalled at the Redskins’ 21, where Matt Bahr kicked a 42-yard field goal.

Bahr, signed Friday to replace the injured Roger Ruzek, had a 27-yarder in the first quarter that gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
