CITY COUNCIL

A summary of selected Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

WALKWAY CLOSURE: Approved closing the Santa Monica Freeway pedestrian bridge at 8th Avenue and 25th Street by constructing an eight-foot chain-link fence and gates at each end. Residents of the area have complained that the crossing has become a gathering place for transients and youths and increasingly is marred by excessive debris, graffiti and illegal activities, including prostitution.

The landmark theater on Hollywood Boulevard opened in 1922, but had fallen on hard times and was closed last year. The city’s Community Redevelopment Agency, with the council’s approval, is negotiating an agreement with American Cinematheque, a nonprofit cultural organization, to repair and refurbish the theatre. The CRA owns the theater.

CHRISTMAS PARADE: Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg requested that $1,050 in city permit fees be waived for the display of street banners along Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards announcing this year’s Hollywood Christmas Parade. The parade is sponsored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

APPOINTMENTS: Approved the appointments of Robert Burkett, a West Los Angeles resident, to the library commission and Thomas H. Russell, a Hollywood resident, to the cultural heritage commission.
