Truck Collision Blocks Freeway Nearly 10 Hours

Two tractor-trailer trucks--one hauling green tomatoes and the other lumber--collided early Thursday morning on the southbound Golden State Freeway near Castaic, leaving two lanes blocked for nearly 10 hours.

CHP Sgt. Les Fritz said that the crash occurred about 12:30 a.m., about two miles south of Templin Highway, when Joe Mack Cavasos of Texas--the driver of the truck loaded with tomatoes--apparently fell asleep and rear-ended the other truck. The front end of the tomato truck became wedged into the rear of the other truck, driven by Bobby Dean Doshier of Oklahoma.

Neither of the drivers were seriously injured.

Neither truck lost any of its loads, but both had to be emptied before they could be pulled apart, Fritz said.

The two lanes were not reopened until 10:20 a.m., but Fritz said the closure had little effect on traffic because two other southbound lanes remained opened the entire time and traffic was light.
