Garfield Grinds Up Lincoln : Bulldogs tame the Tigers, 49-0. Lincoln hasn’t scored a touchdown in the last eight quarters.

After an embarrassing shutout loss at the hands of Jefferson High School a week earlier, Garfield’s offense exploded Friday night.

The victims of the blast were the Lincoln Tigers, who succumbed to a 35-point onslaught by the Bulldogs in the first half en route to a 49-0 loss in a nonleague game at Garfield.

“Tonight we came to play,” Garfield running back Armando Figueroa said.

The game was just slightly less than two minutes old when Garfield took a 7-0 lead on a 24-yard touchdown run by Figueroa. Figueroa, who was held to just 67 yards against Jefferson, had 107 yards in 14 carries and one touchdown in Friday night’s game.

Braulio De La Torre was Garfield’s most potent weapon in the first half, scoring both times he touched the ball.

De La Torre first scored on a 45-yard run in the first quarter and again on a 59-yard pass from quarterback David Villalobos with 8:24 remaining in the half.

Meanwhile, the Tigers struggled offensively.

Quarterback Gerardo Roman, who led the area in passing last year, completed only five of 17 passes in the first half.

“I was off in the first half and I just couldn’t hit my receivers,” said Roman, who ended up completing 11 of 35 passes for 84 yards.

Lincoln Coach Randy Rodriguez has to be concerned about his team’s offense in the past two games.

The Tigers have not scored a touchdown in eight quarters and managed a meager 95 total yards against Garfield.

“We are a new team, inexperienced, and have to find out who we are,” Rodriguez said.

“We will get better as the year progresses.”

Garfield scored twice in the second half, on a five-yard touchdown pass from David Guerra to Raul Gutierrez and a 17-yard run by Eddie Hermoso.

Running back Carlos Alvarado, who rushed for 35 yards in five carries, had touchdown runs of five and 10 yards in the first half.
