COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Medina Leads Irvine Valley to Meet Title

Mayra Medina finished second by one second Saturday to lead Irvine Valley to the women’s championship at the Golden West Invitational cross-country meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Medina covered the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes 6 seconds, narrowly losing to Long Beach’s Magdalena Levy, who set a meet record.

Donna Proia (20:00) was fifth and Summer Gingrich (20:22) 10th as Irvine Valley scored 65 points to 89 for Mt. San Antonio.

Golden West’s Lisa Mote was fourth in 19:31; Golden West was fifth with 115 points.

In the men’s race, Fullerton (132 points) was fourth and Irvine Valley (143) fifth behind winner Mt. San Antonio (22).

Larry Holland of Irvine Valley was the top local finisher, placing 13th with a time of 20:59. Angel Martinez of Mt. SAC won with a meet-record 20:36 over the four-mile course.

In the Steve Scott Classic cross-country meet in El Cajon:

OCC women win--Erin Remy was third in 20:14 for 5,000 meters and Melissa Haynes fifth in 20:51 for OCC, which scored 39 points to 51 for host Cuyamaca.

Orange Coast’s Robert Ho finished third in 21:36 over four miles behind winner Jim Rickets of Cuyamaca (21:35). OCC scored 53 points for third behind Cuyamaca (19) and Foothill (48).

In the Merced water polo tournament:

Rustlers win--Golden West won the championship by defeating West Valley, 15-4, in the final. Corey Delahunt led Golden West with 10 goals for the day. Chris Egan contributed five goals, and goalie James Marland had 13 saves.

Golden West defeated Cuesta, 12-6, in the semifinals.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Golden West 2, Citrus 1--Radim Konecny’s fourth and fifth goals of the year helped Golden West snap a two-game losing streak.
