BURBANK : City to Vote on Grant for Speech Program

Share

The Burbank City Council tonight will have to deal with some very persuasive high school students.

The council is scheduled to vote on whether to give $20,000 to save the speech program at Burbank High School.

In fact, it was public speaking skills learned in the speech program that served students well enough to get them on the agenda. They spoke eloquently of the program last week at a joint school board-City Council meeting, asking the city to help make up a budget shortfall.

In other action, the council is scheduled today to pick a new representative to the Burbank Airport Commission to replace Michael Hastings, who resigned earlier this month. Mayor George Battey Jr. is one of four candidates.

The council is also scheduled to give final approval to a contract with local tennis pro Steve Starleaf to take over and revamp the city’s tennis program at McCambridge Park.

The city wanted to have a pro take over the tennis program, which has been considered haphazardly run. Starleaf is to set up clinics, tournaments, a pro shop, special events and with former head tennis coach at Pierce College, Paul Xanthos, build a tennis academy to train instructors.
