TOP PERFORMERS

Dwayne Cherrington’s 327 yards rushing in 27 carries against Dana Hills Friday night is the county’s eighth-best single-game performance. The junior running back’s efforts included touchdown runs of 69, 53, 19 and 65 yards, helping Santa Ana Valley to a 34-20 victory.

Anaheim sophomore running back Reuben Droughns didn’t just lead the Colonists in rushing--253 yards in 14 carries--he also outgained the entire Cypress offense, which totaled 219 yards. Anaheim scored a 31-7 victory.

Andy Brown was on the receiving end of four passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Davis kept first-half drives alive by scrambling five times for 27 yards. He was sacked only once.

Capistrano Valley’s Dan Geiss rushed for 168 yards and all three touchdowns in the Cougars’ 19-15 victory over El Modena.

Fountain Valley’s Scott Bertoni completed 14 of 18 passes for 240 yards in the Barons’ 42-9 victory over Westminster. Jamal Hills caught eight of those passes for 171 yards.

MIXED RESULTS

ON DEFENSE

Pacifica’s defense sacked Garden Grove quarterback David Pixler seven times for minus 42 yards in the Mariners’ 15-7 victory. One of those sacks resulted in a fumble that led to Pacifica’s second touchdown of the game.

Capistrano Valley’s Bron Witten had his fifth interception of the season in the first half of a 19-15 victory over El Modena.

Huntington Beach quarterback Levi Schuck had not been sacked through three games this season. That streak ended in the second quarter when Edison’s Joey Looms dropped Shuck for a three-yard loss. Schuck was sacked twice by the Chargers, but the Oilers won, 10-7.

Calvary Chapel’s Mark Echan had one interception and returned kickoffs 55, 29 and 28 yards in the 35-17 victory over Laguna Beach.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Garden Grove League race could become a little clearer after Kennedy (3-1, 1-0 in league) faces preseason favorite Los Amigos (4-0, 1-0) Thursday at Garden Grove High School.

San Clemente (4-0) gets another stern test when it plays host to Trabuco Hills (3-1) Friday at San Clemente. Trabuco Hills is the No. 1-ranked team in the Southern Section’s Division VIII. The Tritons are off to one of their best starts in a decade.

It figures to be another tough week in the Sea View League, as Santa Margarita (4-0, 1-0) plays Corona del Mar (2-1, 0-0) at Newport Harbor High School and defending Division IV champion Irvine (2-1, 0-0) plays at Tustin (3-1, 1-0).

ON THE RUN

It was big-play night for Savanna. The Rebels scored on touchdown runs of 80 yards by Paul Waldrop, 74 yards by Canhuy Nguyen and 50 yards by Nguyen in their 28-21 victory over Buena Park. Nguyen finished with 175 yards and quarterback Waldrop 122 yards, both in 10 carries.

ON THE RECORD

“We rushed for 3,000 yards a year ago, and the whole team is back, but they can’t get a half-yard on our best play. It was pathetic tonight.”

--Myron Miller, Costa Mesa coach, after his team fumbled six times and lost to Troy, 14-13.

NOT IMPRESSED

Despite fifth-ranked Esperanza’s 20-6 victory over Lawndale Leuzinger, Coach Gary Meek was not overly impressed with his team’s performance. “I thought we would play a heck of a lot better than that,” Meek said. “We didn’t block well and we kept hurting ourselves.” The Aztecs’ offense sputtered several times and they were penalized seven times for 55 yards. Meek said Esperanza, coming off two big victories over Mater Dei and Capistrano Valley, would have to play much better if it hopes to beat Long Beach Poly next week.
